What Korean skincare teaches about turning ingredients into campaigns

The biggest lesson in Korean skincare is not about skin. It is about turning a single ingredient into an idea people remember. Three brands do this better than almost anyone, and the method behind them works for any beauty range. Run your hero ingredient through three lenses: its story, its feel, and its origin.

The story: Beauty of Joseon

Beauty of Joseon build everything on rice and ginseng, then tie those ingredients to traditional Korean beauty rituals. Even the name “Dynasty Cream” carries that heritage. The lesson: dig into the history, ritual or culture behind your hero ingredient, and let it shape your product names, packaging and campaign line. A story is what turns a claim on the back of the box into a brand.

The feel: FEMMUE

FEMMUE's whole world is flowers: petals, oils and textures, and the way they feel on skin. They do not tell you it is luxurious, they show you in extreme close-up. The lesson: take your main ingredient and show what it feels like, in macro, in movement, even in sound, so the viewer feels it before they read a word.

The origin: SKIN1004

SKIN1004 centre everything on Centella from Madagascar, and their films take you through the sandstone landscapes and baobab trees where it grows. The lesson: look at where your ingredient comes from. The landscape, the light and the colours of that place can shape your next shoot's location, palette and set.

The exercise

Before your next campaign, list every ingredient in your product, not just the hero. Run each one through the three lenses. Most answers will be flat, but one will not, and that one is your campaign. Your creative direction is usually already sitting on the ingredient list.

I turned the three lenses into a free breakdown, with a ready-made prompt you can paste into Claude for each one.
