How many product images do you need per product page?
For most beauty products, aim for 6 to 8 images: a clean hero packshot, the back of pack, a texture shot, a sense of scale, the product in use and at least one lifestyle image. Amazon asks for one compliant main image and recommends at least six more.
How many product images should a beauty product page have?
Aim for 6 to 8. That is usually enough to answer every question a shopper has without making them scroll through repeats. Fewer than 4 often leaves gaps, such as no texture, no sense of size and no ingredients. More than 10 is fine if each image is genuinely different, but extra angles of the same bottle add little.
The better question is what each image is for. Online, your images do the job of picking up the product in a shop: turning it over, opening it and trying it on your hand. Plan your set around those moments.
Which images should you include?
Here is a set that covers most skincare, makeup, haircare and fragrance products. Put them roughly in this order, because the first two or three images get the most attention.
- Hero packshot: the product on a clean background, sharp and accurate. This is your main image.
- Angle or open shot: cap off, pump visible or compact open, so shoppers see how it works.
- Back of pack: ingredients, size and key details, readable when zoomed.
- Texture or swatch: the cream, serum, powder or shade as it really looks.
- Scale: the product in a hand or next to something familiar, so the size is clear.
- In use: the product being applied or used, shown honestly.
- Lifestyle: the product in a setting that shows who it is for and when they use it.
- Benefits graphic: key claims or ingredients laid out clearly, if your platform allows it.
How many images does Amazon allow, and what are the rules?
Amazon asks for one main image and, at the time of writing, recommends adding at least six more images plus a video. The number of image slots shown can vary by category and device, so check Seller Central for your category.
The main image has the strictest rules. It must show the product on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), with the product filling about 85% of the frame, and no added text, logos, borders or watermarks. Images should be at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side if you want shoppers to be able to zoom. Additional images can show lifestyle, scale and infographics.
Amazon's rules change, so always check its current product image requirements before uploading. If you are using AI made imagery, our guide on AI images on Amazon listings covers what to watch.
How many images can you add on Shopify?
Shopify lets you add up to 250 media items to a single product, including images, videos and 3D models, at the time of writing. That limit is rarely the issue. The real limit is your shopper's attention.
Shopify recommends square images at 2048 by 2048 pixels for product photos. Images need to be larger than 800 by 800 pixels for zoom to work, and files can be up to 20 MB. Use the same aspect ratio across a product's images so your page doesn't jump around as people swipe, and check how your theme crops images on mobile.
| Amazon | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| How many images | 1 main image, at least 6 more recommended | Up to 250 media items per product |
| Main image background | Pure white, no added text or logos | Your choice, keep it consistent |
| Size for zoom | At least 1,000 pixels on the longest side | Larger than 800 by 800 pixels |
| Recommended size | Check Seller Central for your category | 2048 by 2048 pixels, square |
Does the number of images change by product type?
Yes. The core set stays the same, but different categories need different proof.
Makeup needs accurate shade images more than anything. If you sell several shades, each one needs its own true to life swatch, ideally shown on a range of skin tones. Skincare leans on texture and ingredients, because shoppers want to know how a serum or cream feels. Fragrance can't be smelled online, so lifestyle and mood images carry more weight, along with the bottle details. Haircare benefits from texture and scale shots, and beauty devices need clear images of every part, how it's used and what comes in the box.
Whatever the category, never use images that show results the product can't achieve. A before and after image must show a real, unaltered result.
Is it better to have more images or better images?
Better images, every time. Eight images that each answer a different question will do more than fifteen variations of the same front angle. Shoppers judge quality from your images too, so one blurry or inaccurate shot can undo the rest.
Accuracy is the thing to protect above all. The shade, label and packaging in every image should match what arrives in the box. A mismatch leads to disappointed customers and returns. Our guide to packshot vs lifestyle images explains how to balance the clean shots with the scene setting ones.
How do you produce a full image set without a big shoot?
Traditionally, a full set for a range of products meant a studio day for packshots and a separate shoot for lifestyle. AI product photography can produce the lifestyle, texture and scale images from good photos of your real product, while a person checks each image against the product before delivery.
If you want to see how that works for your own range, Niko x Studios makes AI product photography for beauty brands, with each image made for the format it will be used in. Whichever route you choose, start by listing the 6 to 8 images you need per product, then fill the gaps.
Questions people also ask
What is the minimum number of images for a product page?
There is no universal minimum, but fewer than 4 usually leaves shoppers with questions. A hero shot, back of pack, texture and scale image is a reasonable floor.
Should every image be on a white background?
No. Amazon requires white for the main image only. Other images, and Shopify images generally, can use lifestyle settings, but keep the style consistent.
Do I need a video on my product page?
It isn't required, but a short video can show texture and application better than stills. Amazon recommends adding one where you can.
Should each shade have its own images?
Yes. Shoppers choosing a shade need to see that exact shade accurately, ideally as a swatch and on skin.
Can I use the same images on Amazon and Shopify?
Mostly, but check Amazon's main image rules and each platform's size recommendations. You may need a white background version for Amazon and a different crop for your site.
